Unit Overview

aka: I Can Dream, Can't I?

The following unit was conceived as (approximately) a 6 (but looking like an 8) week interdisciplinary, collaborative unit for grades 5/6, involving all curriculum areas.  It assumes the complete, open, and willing collaboration in all areas, as well as the assumption of all aspects of technology and other teaching tools being available in every quantity needed, at any time, and with the latest-and-greatest updates, and will culminate with a student-written and acted performance, with student-created scenery - all videotaped/podcast by the students, and shared with family and friends through an online resource chosen by the class.

Art, Music, PE responsibility:

  • Art - Calligraphy and quill-pens, basket-weaving, pottery, sundials or candle-making, scenery planning and creation
  • Music - Colonial and Native American music and instruments
  • PE - Colonial and Native American games and dances

Guidance responsibility: Issues of moving, isolation, desertion, friendship, prejudice

Language Arts responsibility: Reading of the book, vocabulary, journals kept during reading

Library responsibility: Gathering materials for each segment of learning, guiding through research process, teaching technology when needed

Mathematics responsibility: Measurements for miniature log cabin creation and/or longhouse creations, charts/graphs of plant life, mapping

Science responsibility: Plant and animal life in the area of the book's setting; edible plants, survival techniques, animal tracking, hunting/trapping

Social Studies responsibility: History of the movement of people to the colonies, then westward.  Native American history, housing of the times

Kelly, all I can say is, "Wow!" When you do interdisciplinary, you REALLY do interdisciplinary! Nice set up with a page for each subject area, showing the schedule and all. It's very well thought out. (And I like the statement in your PowerPoint about assuming ideal situations and not accepting anything to the contrary.) One thing you will want to do, though, is fix your sidebar links -- they all have extra stuff in the URLs (I have not got a clue why) so they do not hyperlink properly. Everything else functions beautifully!

Thank-you, Cheryl. I tend to take on more than I can chew (aka: Big Mouth Syndrome?) but I couldn't see the LMS role without an idea of what the rest would be, so I had to put on my multi-personality (split personality?) role to figure that out! Those side bar links worked before - don't know what happened. Thanks for the heads-up on that - I'll try to fix it!

Oh, darn! The link for, I Can Dream Can't I? used to go to a page where the Andrews Sisters' song of the same name would play. It's not working anymore, either!
